STARTING PERFUME ORGAN SYNTHETIC MATERIALS : METHYLIONONE

Another important synthetic material is methylionone. Actually , commercial methylionones are a mixture of isomers ( alpha , beta and gamma ) thar are named according to their main component.
The most employed is by far alpha -Isomethylionone or MethylIonone -Gamma ( CAS: 127-51-5), having the best odour among the methylionones : floral , violetta-orris like , woody , powdery.
Like hedione , methylionone owes its success to being very versatile and inexpensive . Most modern perfumes contain it in large amounts because it is part of so called " cake", which is a sort of basic structure , generally made up of four ingredients ( Hedione , Methylionone , IsoE Super and Galaxolide ), which gathers up some 80% of the formula. To this structure other materials , characterizing the final scent , will be add.
Moreover , being by volatility near the top of the base notes , in many perfumes , it works as a bridge between these and the middle notes .
It blends well with almost all other materials .

STARTING PERFUME ORGAN SYNTHETC MATERIALS: HEDIONE

I think that to make a good perfume only with natural materials someone must be very very capable . I am not so whereby I prefer to rely on synthetic materials too.

I always try to mantain a high concentration of natural , but some synthetic are really indispensable to reach more and more satsfactory results.

I could not work without :

Hedione

The molecule is methyl dihydrojasmonate ( Hedione is the trade name patented by Firmenich ), an ester that occurs naturally in jasmine absolute.

Indeed , it was discovered in the early '50s studying the jasmine absolute's composition , and it was fist used at very low concentration in creation of bases.

Its exploit in perfumery came in 1966 with Eau Sauvage by Christian Dior . In this perfume it was used by Edmond Roudnitska for the first time as important ingredient at the concentration of 2% , revolutionary for its time , also because it introduced a green jasmine floral note in a masculine scent, and it was so successful that its use was extended in 1972 to Diorella.

Since then it has had further spread with a progressive increase of its percentage in the perfumes : in 1976 Jean Claude Ellena in First by Van Cleef & Arpels arrived at a rate of 20% , while in Odeur 53 by Comme des Garçons ,hedione covers more than half of the formulation.

The extraordinary success of Hedione certainly is not due to its odour , even if pleasant , fresh green floral , slightly lemony , in my opinion more honeysuckle-magnolia than jasmine like , but to its versatility, inexpensiveness and especially to the remarkable effects that brings to the compositions , because Hedione is actually especial being able to confer radiance , effervescence , freshness , trasparency to any fragrance.

It equilibrates , lends cohesion , is diffusive and tenacious.

It is particullary effective to enrich jasmine of a fresh green nuance , to give lift to rose , to lend brightness to all floral compositions , to lend effervescence to citrus notes , and also to create fruity notes as fig , mango , papaya , peach and apricot.

Finally the percentages are widely variable, usually from 2 to 15% , but even up 35% and more.

There is no hazard of overdose.

-Cedro rosso , Juniperus virginiana ( Cupressaceae).

-Cedro del Texas , Juniperus mexicana ( Cupressaceae).

-Cedro cinese , Chamaecyparis funebris ( Cupressaceae).

STARTING PERFUME ORGAN NATURAL MATERIALS: BASE NOTES

And now a quick glimpse to the basic natural ingredients suggested as initial choice for the perfume's organ, materials very important to fix the perfume.

These are:

Benzoin e.o

Vanilla absolute or tincture

Sandalwood e.o

Cedarwood e.o.

Patchouli e.o

Vetiver e.o

Benzoin is a balm, obtained by making incisions in the bark of the tree Styrax benzoin , and mainly produced in Asiatic countries as Indonesia , Java ; Laos , Thailand and Vietnam.

There are two different varieties :

-Benzoin of Siam from Styrax tonkinensis . It has a very pleasant sweet-balsamic odour with a hint of vanilla.

-Benzoin of Sumatra from Styrax benzoin. It has a more strong odour , owing to its high content of cinnamates and styrene.

They are both widely used in perfumes and flavours.

Benzoin blends well with elemi , Copaiba balm , rose , bergamot and citric oils , jasmine , olibanum , myrrh , sandalwood , cypress , spicy oils .

It is very versatile and excellent for "oriental" perfumes.

****

Natural vanilla is another milestone in perfumery's art . Its essence is extracted from the fruits , the pods , of an orchid , Vanilla planifolia , native to Mexico.

The most interesting varietes are:

-Bourbon Vanilla , from Réunion , of exceptional quality.

-Tahiti Vanilla , having a warm and delicate aroma , spicy with a plum note , but its production is very limited.

-Tahitensis Vanilla , spicy , warm , with an anise note , produced in Papua New Guinea , that is among the best vanillas in the world.

Natural vanilla exhales a very complex and unique scent , because it is made of multiple components , although the major role is played by the molecule of vanillin , 4-hydroxy-3 methoxybenzaldehyde , an aldehyde , that is also obtained by synthesis . The vanilla seeds contain a variable from 1.5% to 4% percentage.

Essential in the composition of sweet oriental and ambery perfumes , in small amounts it rounds any perfume , but it should not be used to cover scent's structural failures .

Benzoin and vanilla belong to the group of " sweet-balsamic " basic constituens , while sandalwood and cedarwood are "woods" and patchouli and vetiver are " grasses-roots".

****

Sandalwood is by long the most valuable wood in perfumery. Its essential oil derives by steam distillation , but also by extraction with carbon dioxide , of the hard and dark core of the wood of white sandalwood , Santalum album , or Indian sandalwood.

This is an evergreen tree , a root parasite , tapping the roots of the other species for water and inorganic nutrients , similar to misletoe , Viscum album , that parasites the trees' branches.

The variety cultivated in the region of Mysore ( India) is the most valuable.

The tree must be 30 years old to produce essential oil , and the yield is about 5%.

This explains its high cost and low availability.

Anyway its odour is divine , woody , warm , soft , lightly balsamic with animal hints. It fits well in any fragrance , but especially in the oriental and floral ones.

Cheaper alternatives are the essential oils of red sandalwood and Australian sandalwood . Often less expensive products are blends of oils from different origins. Instead the choice of synthetic analogues is much wider : Santalol , Javanol , Sanjinol ,Sandalore.....to name a few.

****

Another important wood is cedarwood . The true cedar oil is that derived from three species of trees , belonging to the genus Cedrus:

-Cedrus atlantica , growing in the Atlas Mountains in northern Africa.

-Cedrus libani, growing just in Lebanon .

-Cedrus deodara , typical of the Hymalayan region.

It has a warm , wood , soft fragrance , with slightly urinous hints.

But also other trees are called " cedar" , and three species , tht are actually cypresses , are widely used in perfumery:

-Red Cedar , Juniperus virginiana ( Cupressaceae).

-Texas Cedar ,Juniperus mexicana ( Cupressaceae).

-Chinese Cedar , Chamaecyparis funebris ( Cupressaceae).

Red cedar is very used to make pencils , so it has the typical " pencil wood" smell.

****

And now something about the unmistakable and unreplaceable patchouli oil , derived from steam distillation or extraction with CO2 of the dried leaves of Pogostemon cablin , a small tropical shrub of the Labiatae family.

It is a reddish-brown viscous oil with a heavy , camphoraceous , rooty-earthy-woody odour . Known since antiquity , it was put between the silk fabrics to protect them from moths , during their transport along Silk Road , but as scent gained high popularity in the 60 's and 70's in the hippie movement.

It is still widely used in perfumery , especially in low concentrations , due to its overwhelming nature . It partecipates to important accords like chypre , fougère and mellis ( I'll talk about them in another post), and exalts the rose .

In higher concentrations lends a connotation " dark , gothic" to the perfume.

****

And finally , the mythic Vetiver oil , distilled by steam from the roots of the tropical grass Vetiveria zizanoides , robust grass ,as tall as a man with an extensive and intricate root system, native of the Indian subcontinent , but now cultivated in many tropical and subtropical countries , also because its roots are effective in preventing landfalls.

Vetiver oil is amber coloured , viscous , very tenacious , it has a characteristic green , earthy , herbaceous and balsamic smell with sweet and smoky nuances and a hint of dark chocolate . Sometimes it is regarded as a green or woody note although it is an earthy root.

It is widely used in perfumes , especially in floral compositions , where its woody characteristics bring out the flowers , in the " chypre" , in the "oriental" ones for its interesting chocolate-balsamic facets , in the " incenses" and in the citric colonies to lend a woody contrast.

STARTING PERFUME ORGAN NATURAL MATERIALS: FLORAL AND SPICE NOTES

These are the first materials suggested for the floral heart notes :

Geranium essential oil , which is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves of Pelargonium graveolens. Its smell is rose-like with green facets. The most valuable variety is the Bourbon one.
It is very important to build the "
rose" note.

Ylang-ylang
is one of the most beautiful and versatile raw material in perfumery. It has a delightful sweet floral and very diffusive odour with a typical floral-spicy- balsamic , sultry , intoxicating , jasmin-like note.
Ylang-ylang oil is extract by steam distillation of fresh flowers of a tree , Canaga odorata, which is cultivated everywhere in the Tropics , especially in Madagascar and Comores.
The best is the Extra quality.
It's a perfect oil to use if you are a neophyte in perfumery because it combines easily with other materials.
As it may seem to sweet , it can be softened with citrus oils . Ylang-ylang appears in the top notes as well as in the base notes , because it contains both high and low volatile components.
It's perfect to soften the aldehydic notes , as it does in Chanel N°5.

Lavender essential oil is very useful in the composition of masculine , aromatic-agrestic , chypre and fougère perfumes.
The true Lavender oil is obtained by steam distillation of the fresh flowering tops and stalks of Lavandula angustifolia.

Clary Sage oil is isolated by steam distillation of the flowering ends of this biennal plant of the Labiatae. It has a lavender type odour , but with interesting ambery and leathery nuances.

The absolute of Jasmine , beautiful , precious and very expensive material is obtaneid by the pommade or enfleurage process of the flowers of Jasminum grandiflorum and from the concrete obtained by extraction with volatile solvents.
This is a material that increases the perfume's quality . Indeed , the addition , even in small quantities , of precious natural materials to the synthetic ones , completes , beautifies and lends high quality to the perfume.

Another gem is the absolute of
Rose . We can distinguish the absolute of Rosa centifolia , named also absolute of Rose de Mai , characterized by a honey-peppered facet ; the Bulgarian Rose absolute coming from the concrete of Rosa damascena , and the Turkish Rose absolute , produced also from Rosa damascena , but less peppery and of lower quality than the Bulgarian one.
As well as the absolute of Jasmin , even traces of these materials are sufficient to raise the quality of the scent.

And for the
spice component
:

Clove essential oil , extract from sun dried flowers of a tropical tree of the myrtle family. Its smell is distinctive , strong , sharp , spicy, carnation-like,dental cabinet-like for the high concentration of eugenol and similar.

Coriander essential oil derives from the distillation of the seeds of this plant. Its odour is spicy , soft , floral , for the high presence of linalool, which gives a rosewood-like impression.

ORGANO DEL PROFUMO INIZIALE Materie Naturali : LE ESPERIDATE.

STARTING PERFUME ORGAN

NATURAL MATERIALS :
HESPERIDES CITRUS

I will try to illustrate schematically the essential features of some raw materials . I'll expand the topic in a future book , if I'll have time , will and perserverance to write it.

We can start with Hesperides , ie Citrus , natural essential oils .

The oils of -bergamot , lemon and orange - mentioned in the previous post, are required for the top notes , for their high volatility and their immediate emotional impact.

Bergamot with the characteristic fresh citric-herbal -floral smell , the smell of Earl Grey , is a milestone in perfumery's art and it is indispensable for top notes , for Eau de Cologne , because it accords well with almost all other materials and because it partecipates in two important accords , chypre and fougère ( we'll resume them later ).

Caution : the crude oil contains the photosensitizing furocoumarin bergaptene , which must be removed or otherwise it is preferable to avoid sun exposition.

Lemon has a beautiful , fresh , clean , stimulating smell, that accords very well with woody notes , especially with sandalwood and vetiver , but it is more difficult to use it in perfumes , as anyone does not like it.

Owing to an olfactory conditioning , to someone remind the smell of a well known product for furniture cleaning , which just contains a lemon fragrance.

Unfortunately, the use of certain scents in functional products compromise our appreciation of certain odors : for example a rose perfume may remind the insecticide. In the rating of an odor are also involved cultural events and personal emotional experiences : for someone carnation and lily smell like a funeral room or a cemetery.

I like very much the smell of natural lemon, regardless of the presence of its synthetic analogues in detergents and furniture cleaning sprays.

Mandy Aftel , to avoid the furniture cleaner effect, suggests to replace it with Litsea cubeba e.o, but the latter's odor is much more harsh , sharp , green-lemony , similar to Citral.

As regards orange , you can choose the sweet variety or the bitter one , or both.

The sweet variety yields mainly in floral bouquets , but the bitter type is much more versatile and incisive in the compositions.

It is an oil , rich of aldehydes , that binds well to the flowers , mainly to ylang ylang, whose it dampens the excessive sweetness , and to tuberose , whose it lightens the fat and opulent facet.

The oil is obtained by squeezing epicarp , the peel of the fruit , but from the flowers of the same plant- Citrus aurantium bitter variety - are obtained neroli and orangeflower absolute , while from the leaves and the twigs is extracted the Petitgrain bigarade.

From the sweet variety is obtained only the essential oil from the peel or essence of Portugal.

English version

Bilding our " Perfume Organ".

The " Perfume Organ", that is the set of odorous materials available to the perfumer , if belonging to professional " noses", is composed of thousand of ingredients , and is still increasing.

But for a
beginner what would be the minimal " Perfume Organ", essential to start the scented adventure?

It depends on the type of perfume you want to create , whether natural , synthetic or mixed.

Natural materials include the
essential oils , which are mostly readily available online and in common herbalists, and the absolutes , some accessible and inexpensive , others , especially some floral , particularly valuable and expensive.

I selected a
short list
of easy available natural materials that allow to neophyte to experiment a lot :

Bergamot e.o
Lemon e.o
Orange e.o.

Geranium e.o.
Ylang-ylang e.o.
Lavender e.o.
Clary sage e.o.
Jasmin abs.
Rose abs.

Clove e.o.
Coriander e.o.

Benzoin
Vanilla

Cedar e.o.
Sandalwood e.o.
Patchouli e.o.
Vetiver e.o.

If you prefer a more " perfumey" creation , these are the synthetic materials to start with:

Hedione
Methyl ionone
Galaxolide
Iso E Super
Linalool
Phenyl Ethyl alcohol
Geraniol
Citronellol
Hydroxycitronellal or Lyral
Benzyl acetate
Benzyl salicylate
Eugenol
Coumarin
Vanillin

Purists of natural will use only natural products . I use both natural and synthetic products . However , if you use mostly syntethic ingredients , adding even small amounts of valuable natural products , such as absolutes , for example , gives quality to the finished perfume.
